Florida Motorcycle Titles - What to Know

Florida motorcycle titles are an essential document that every motorcycle owner needs to have. This document is issued by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) and serves as proof of ownership of the motorcycle.

Here is what you need to know about Florida motorcycle titles:

How to obtain a motorcycle title

To obtain a motorcycle title, you need to submit the following documents to the DHSMV:

  • A completed Florida Motor Vehicle Title Application (Form 82040)

  • A valid Florida driver's license or identification card

  • Proof of ownership, such as a bill of sale or title from another state

  • Proof of insurance

  • Payment for the applicable fees

  • You can either apply for a motorcycle title in person at a DHSMV office or mail the completed application and required documents to the DHSMV.

Transferring a motorcycle title

If you are purchasing a used motorcycle from a private seller, you will need to transfer the title to your name. This can be done by completing a Florida Motor Vehicle Title Application (Form 82040) and submitting it to the DHSMV along with the following documents:

  • The current title signed by the seller

  • A bill of sale

  • Proof of insurance

  • Payment for the applicable fees

  • If you are purchasing a motorcycle from a dealership, the dealership will typically handle the title transfer for you.

Lost or stolen motorcycle titles

If your motorcycle title is lost or stolen, you can obtain a replacement by completing a Florida Motor Vehicle Title Application (Form 82040) and submitting it to the DHSMV along with a $75 fee. You will also need to provide proof of ownership, such as a bill of sale or registration.

Lienholder information on a motorcycle title

If you have a lien on your motorcycle, the lienholder's information will be listed on the motorcycle title. A lien is a legal claim on a property (in this case, the motorcycle) by a lender until a debt is paid off.

As the borrower, you will need to provide proof that the debt has been paid off to the lienholder and request a release of the lien on the motorcycle title. Once the lien is released, you can transfer the title to your name.

Expired motorcycle titles

Florida motorcycle titles are valid for 10 years from the date of issuance. If your motorcycle title has expired, you can renew it by completing a Florida Motor Vehicle Title Application (Form 82040) and submitting it to the DHSMV along with a $75 fee. You will also need to provide proof of ownership, such as a bill of sale or registration.

It is important to note that if your motorcycle title has expired for more than 30 days, you will need to complete a safety inspection before the title can be renewed.
